Carignan is like a love fern... you get out what you put in. Without a watchful eye, or in poor growing conditions, this very VERY productive variety can be unbalanced and clunky in the glass. But when working with minimal intervention techniques and fruit as well curated and cared for as the Carignan at Testa Vineyard, you bear witness to little drinkable masterpieces.
Established in 1912 by Gaetano and Maria Testa, this well respected vineyard in Calpella is currently run by the 4th generation of Marias and her son Charlie. Organic growing practices, old old old vines, and fluffy vineyard dogs lend a true sense of history to Testa. This particular block was planted just after WW2 on Yokayo series silty loam.
We decided to take this beautiful fruit, so full of complexity, and turn the ‘fun’ dial up to 11 by fermenting carbonically. Carbonic ferments allow us to lend a bright, approachable and juicy character to the Carignan. The sweet/tart of summer strawberries and pink starbursts are kissed by sweet little bouquet garni bundles. Think Rainbow Brite & Strawberry Shortcake at their beach house on the Adriatic.
Always (and only) minimal Sulfites added.
